NAACPThe National Association Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) founded in 1909, it was and is the nations oldest and largest civil rights organization. (naacp.org) Jane Addams, an advocate for immigrants and the poor; Ray Stannard Baker an American journalist; and Florence Kelly, an American social and political reformer; all wanted to advance the rights of African Americans, Asians, and any colored person living in America. The NAACP's role is to eliminate racial hatred and discrimination.
Political Machine
Political machines where a group of any party, that worked to influence voters in exchange for giving for what they need. They knew that there where many poor people so they used them to influence the voting poll. They have been doing their practices from the early 19th century, and even to current affairs. It happens in any city that is big such as New York
Birth Control MovementMargret Sanger educated urban, and poor people about the benefits of family planning through birth control. She founded the organization Planned Parenthood, and also established the first birth control clinic in the united states.
Margret Sanger was pro-woman choice. She founded planed parent hood and also established the first birth control clinics. She believed that when the mother is suffering from tuberculosis, kidney disease, heart disease, or pelvic deformity, or whose parents economic circumstances do not guarantee to provide the children with the necessities of life (Sanger, Margret). You can read more about this in her book "The Woman Citizen". Because of here radical ideas, she was thrown in jail numerous times for here opinions. |
ConsumerismMass ProductionInstead of making items one at a time, assembly lines had many people working on just one step of the process. This dramatically reduced costs, and in turn gave the large businesses higher profits.
Henry Ford thought out of the box. He thought that, higher paid workers would be more likely to buy his product. He was correct, and because of this the cost of the car also went down. Mass production of inexpensive products due to high wages, is named Fordism. ModernizationThe Progressive Era wanted to be more modern. From science, technology, and education (muckrakers) . People had the desire to improve the environment around them (inventions) and the conditions of life, with a belief in experts and efficiency.
What do all of these have in common? They were all made during the progressive era. Many would be used for house work, others would be just to relax. Cars made traveling very efficient.
InventionsIn 1888 inventor Thomas Edison announced to the world that he wanted to, "Doing for the eye what the phonograph does for the ear". He was granted the patent for the motion picture camera or "Kinetograph". Without the Kinetograph we wouldn't have movies like Star Wars, or even TV shows like Breaking Bad. The middle class was amazed by the moving pictures. "The Great Train Robbery" from 1903 was one of the first movies that had a story.
